LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro EMS celebrated a life-saving milestone Friday morning.
The department rolled out a new blood program about a year ago. Two specialized EMS units carrying blood are sent to certain calls where transfusions could be needed, such as shootings, stabbings and car accidents.
Since the program started, EMS has administered more than 100 units of blood to 91 patients, 88% of whom left the hospital.
"Prior to us rolling this out in the community, there are quite simply patients who would not have survived and, you know, have because of this program," Maj. Chris Lokits said. "So it's really valuable for the community to have this resource available."
The agency is now partnering with UofL Health to rotate units of blood nearing expiration to make sure it never goes to waste. It's encouraging everyone to donate blood if they can to keep the supply strong.
