LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After months of intense training, 17 recruits graduated from the Louisville Metro Police Department's Metro Academy Class 58.

Fellow officers, families and supporters gathered at Valley Traditional High School on Wednesday morning to celebrate the graduation. LMPD chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel and Mayor Craig Greenberg congratulated the officers and welcomed them to the ranks of the police force.

"Don't forget this day, don't forget this day, how you felt sitting in that seat," Gwinn-Villaroel said. "Don't forget your why as to why you joined LMPD."

At 20 years old, Daniel Ovalle Garcia is the youngest recruit. Garcia became interested in joining the force after going for a ride-along.

"I know that with me on the streets I will really be helpful to other officers and myself, making people feel comfortable," Garcia said.

LMPD is currently 260 officers short.

"Public safety is the first and greatest responsibility of Metro Government and while that's the focus of your job, you're not alone," Greenberg said.
