LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A documentary detailing the scientific and spiritual interpretations of what happens when we die features an interview with a Louisville doctor.

The movie "After Death" debuts in 2,000 theaters this weekend. The trailer features Dr. Ajmal Zemmar, a neurosurgeon at the University of Louisville.

"I had full brain recordings from a dying man's brain," Dr. Zemmar said in the clip.

The "After Death" movie, written in part by a New York Times reporter and produced by Angel Studios, is a faith oriented look at what happens in the dying process. There are accounts from people who died suddenly, were resuscitated and detailed what they saw and experienced.

"My brother-in-law, who was 36-years-old, was killed by a drunk driver, and it was this immediate sudden loss, within my family, and it caused us to ask questions," said writer and director, Stephen Gray.

Dr.  Zemmar posted on social media about his experience this week at the premiere. "Amazing experience at the premiere of After Death. Unreal to go to the cinema and see yourself on the screen."

As WDRB reported last year, Dr. Zemmar was part of a group of scientists around the world that examined records following the death of an 87-year-old man from Vancouver, Canada in 2022. He was a patient with epilepsy that fell. Doctors monitored him with electroencephalography to detect seizures, but during the recording of brain waves, the patient had a heart attack and died.

Dr. Zemmar was among the doctors who went through the graphs and images of the last 15 minutes of his life to see what happened as he died.

"It's going to an audience and a number of people in the world, and I think that's very hard to achieve, if you only share this through the scientific publication of the work," said Dr. Zemmer. "I think it's brilliant and fabulous for us."

The evidence showed the brain has bursts of activity similar to memory flashbacks. So researchers examined if there is truth to the idea of someone's life "flashing before their eyes" as they die.

His research drew national attention.

After Death is a gripping feature film that explores what happens after we die, based on real near-death experiences, conveyed by scientists, authors, and survivors. From the New York Times bestselling authors who brought you titles like 90 Minutes in Heaven, Imagine Heaven, and To Heaven and Back, emerges a cinematic peek beyond the veil that examines the spiritual and scientific dimensions of mortality, inviting us to wonder: Is there life after death?

"Our hope is that people come out of the theater, and pick up that phone and talk to that brother they haven't talked to in two years," documentary producer Jason Pamer said.

The "After Death" documentary is in theaters Friday. Showtimes are listed online for movie theaters in Louisville and southern Indiana including Baxter Avenue Theatres, Phoenix New Albany 16, Xscape Jeffersonville 12, AMC Stonybrook 20, Cinemark Preston Crossings 16 and Cinemark Tinseltown Louisville.
