LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Water Company is launching a project to preserve the aging Crescent Hill Reservoir.

This June, the company will begin the first steps of its multi-year project to preserve the reservoir.

The Crescent Hill Reservoir was built in 1879 and significant repairs, such as securing the grassy perimeter and installing a heavy-duty liner, were made in the late 90s and early 2000s, according to LWC. Now, the liner must be replaced again.

The reservoir has two basins. The north—which is closest to the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center—and the south, which is closer to Frankfort Avenue. The liner in each basin needs replacing, and Louisville Water said it will take about two years to complete.

The project will be completed in stages. First, the north basin will be drained and sediment will be emptied, taking up to 50 truckloads a day to remove it. The old liner will be removed, repairs will be made and then a new liner will be installed. The same process will happen to the south basin.

The iron railing around the reservoir will also be updated to meet current safety guidelines.
