LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville woman got to carry the Paralympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics in Paris.
Atherton High School alum Oksana Masters had the honor of carrying the torch Wednesday to kick off the 2024 Paralympics.Â
Masters has won 17 medals in rowing, skiing and cycling since she began competing in the Paralympics in 2012.
She's set to compete as a paracyclist in the road race and time trial events Sept. 4-5.
Masters was born in the Ukraine with birth defects to her limbs and organs believed to be from the aftermath of Chernobyl, the world's worst nuclear incident.
Her birth defects caused her to have both legs amputated when she was a child. She has also had numerous reconstructive surgeries on her hands.
