LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville honored the accomplishments of Black youth taking steps toward their future.
The 45th annual Black Achievers Awards Celebration was held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville on Saturday night. The event is put on by he YMCA Black Achievers from the Chestnut Street Family YMCA.
Since 1979, YMCA Black Achievers have worked to encourage and inspire youth to pursue their educational and career goals.
Those involved in the program participate in education-based mentoring, hands-on learning experiences and other opportunities to help them reach their fullest potential.
"Being in Black Achievers provides me with a safe space by people who look like me that are driven and their mindset is 'I want to achieve excellence,'" said Janae Allen, a member of Black Achievers. "So it also gives us exposure whether it be for students that are in engineering and get to be engineers and network or get to meet people and find internships and scholarships."
The Black Achievers program is open to young people in high school. To learn more about the YMCA Black Achievers, click here.
