LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers in downtown Louisville can expect some traffic impacts this week as the long-awaited two-way conversion of Main Street approaches the finish line.

Orange cones and barrels have marked the construction zone for months ahead of the change. This week, crews will begin striping the right side of Main Street. Once that's done, traffic will be shifted from one-way to two-way.

Drivers can expect most intersections along Main Street to be all-way stops with stop signs until new traffic signals are installed. The intersections of 2nd and Main and 2nd and market will keep the traffic lights.

"I think it will be easier for the people doing tourism to get around in Louisville," said Travis Kaufman, who lives off Main Street. "It's easier to commute instead of having to go all the way down and all the way around a block just to get in one spot."

The work is part of the $5.4 million Main Remade project, aimed at improving safety and accessibility along a main artery in downtown Louisville.

"I thought it was a great idea," said Kaufman. "My mom and dad said that the neighborhood used to be two ways and it was way easier to get around or what not so they're very excited that it's going back to (a) two (way) road."

This phase of the project is the East Phase, which includes the section of Main Street between Wenzel and 2nd streets. Along with the one-way to two-way street conversions, state officials are also upgrading crosswalks and intersections. They've also added a protected bike lane.

Those who have watched the construction for months, like Kaufman, say they're ready.

"They've been working on this road for a while now, adding all the sidewalks and curbs and everything, and now they're wrapping it up. Sounds like a pretty good deal," Kaufman said.

The East Phase is expected to be completed by the end of July. To learn more about the Main Remade project or to track its progress, click here.
