LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Construction started Monday on a project that will convert Main Street to two-ways in downtown Louisville.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said construction started on the East Phase of the Main Remade project. The project is intended to improve accessibility in downtown Louisville. In the past six years along the project corridor, there were 464 crashes.

Main Street will be converted from a one-way street to two-way street between Wenzel Street and Second Street, near the KFC Yum! Center. There will also be upgrades to crosswalks and intersections, a protected bike lane, dedicated left-turn lanes and new traffic signals, according to a news release.

Initial work will include curbing and constructing sidewalks. Motorists should expect changes in traffic patterns, lane shifts and lane closures.

Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2026. According to a news release, MAC Construction and Excavating was awarded the $5.4 million contract for the work.
