LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - "This is where I'm most comfortable. This is a true representation of who I am," said Katie George, who was recently crowned at Miss Kentucky U.S.A.
George said she prefers a ponytail and no makeup. She's also captain of U of L's volleyball team and is showing her true colors.
"I feel like every morning I've been having to go sweat out on the court or in the weight room and then go fix my hair and shower really quick and don pretty clothes," George said.
She is a fierce competitor on the court, who took her talents to the stage.
She was crowned Miss Kentucky in her first ever beauty pageant."I'm a sports girl at heart, so i never really pictured myself entering one let alone winning one."
But when she did. George busted out a double fist pump, her signature move."When they called my name, I immediately went to that, because that's what's natural and that's what's comfortable when I win a point or whatever."
When asked what she was thinking about when her name was called as the winner, she said, "I was thinking, oh I finally get to have a slice of pizza. That's really what I want."
Besides the pizza, George says her volleyball training translates perfectly in the pageant world."I'm used to going in with a goal and accomplishing it every single day in the gym, and it's the same thing with your walk or how you hold yourself on stage, how you smile, how you pose.
Miss Kentucky plans to use the crown and what it stands for to empower other people."Yes, you can be the fiercest, most intense competitor on the court or field and be a sports girl. And yes you can be elegant and poised and beautiful on a stage."
George is proving that a person can blend the two worlds together and succeed at both."I want to be able to maintain everything, because I want to be that person. I want to be the role model that people can look up to and say wow she did it all.
George has a very full plate right now, and she says the crown is definitely the heaviest."I think I'm gonna have to work on being more graceful, so I don't swing it off my head or what not."
Miss Kentucky knows she has a few things to learn, but she aced this one. "Hopefully, I get called to the top 15, when I get out to Miss U.S.A.
When talking about the potential for her signature victory fist pump, George said, "Maybe not such a drastic fist pump, but it's gotta be in there somewhere."
