LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana University student Lauren Spierer was last seen on June 3, 2011, after spending a night out with friends in Bloomington.
As her family marks the 13th anniversary of her disappearance, a new book is being released by an investigative reporter who covered the story from the beginning.
"College Girl, Missing: The True Story of How a young Woman Disappeared in Plain Sight" by Shawn Cohen focuses on how the case has gone unsolved.
Bloomington Police said Spierer was headed home but never got to her apartment at the intersection of West 9th Street and North College Avenue. She was reported missing later that day.
In a social media post from the family, Charlene Spierer said their relationship with Cohen has changed over the years.
"I have come to trust that our missions to find Lauren, get answers and have justice served are aligned," Spierer's mother wrote. "Much more than just a story for Shawn all these years later, I truly believe he genuinely wants to bring our family’s nightmare to a close."
Charlene Spierer said in the post that reading the book was hard, but there are details in the case that even they hadn't learned.
"I can’t say it wasn’t difficult to read, because it was," she wrote. "Most things we knew. Some things we did not. We are still fiercely protective of Lauren. Not having answers, not knowing which scenario is the correct one, still waiting but no longer expecting to bring Lauren’s remains home is excruciating."
Charlene Spierer said, after 13 years, she hopes the book helps uncover new first-hand information and facts.
"Some people will hear about Lauren for the first time," she wrote. "Some people will have forgotten and moved on. What I am hoping is that some people will remember and finally, finally come forward."
Anyone with information her location is asked to contact the Bloomington Police Department at 812-339-4477.
