LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several doctors and medical professionals sprang into action when a teen was severely injured in a shark attack at a Florida beach last week.Ā

The June 7 incident wasĀ one of two attacks just miles apart. Dr. Mohammad Ali, anĀ interventional radiologist with Baptist Medical Group in Mississippi, was one of the first people to treat the teen.Ā

The Mississippi Baptist Medical Center hasĀ recognized Dr. Ali's heroic actions on its Facebook page.Ā

Ali said he was visiting Seacrest Beach to celebrate his wife's birthday. He said he was boogie boarding with his family Friday afternoon when he saw children running out of the water. That's when he spotted blood in the water and the injured teen.Ā

Ali said he applied a tourniquet to what was left of the teen's upper right leg while other medical professionals tried to stop the bleeding in her left hand before she was taken to the hospital.Ā

The teen was then taken to a hospital for surgery and is expected to recover.Ā

Ali said he is "wishing the best for her and her family. They have a long road ahead, but they are a very strong family. She is a very strong-willed individual, and I know that she's meant to be here and meant to have a very bright future."

Ali said the teen Facetimed him Tuesday night to say thank you for saving her life.
