LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A mobile lung cancer screening is visiting southern Indiana this week.
IU Health created a mobile health care resource offering low-dose CT scans. The mobile unit is in Sellersburg this week as Clark County Health Department is one of the first hosts.
"Our mission is simple, make lung cancer screening accessible to every Hoosier," Doug Bentfield, administrator at the Clark County Health Department, said in a news release. "With only 6% of eligible individuals currently being screened, this mobile coach is bridging the gap by bringing screening services right to the doorsteps of those who need them the most."
The mobile unit is equipped with low-dose CT technology for safe screenings. According to a news release, routine lung cancer screening is the most effective way to detect lung cancer at an early stage.
People between ages of 50 to 80 years old should get screened. Anyone with a history of smoking 20 packs a year should also be screened. Current and former smokers who quit within the past 15 years should also get screened.
"Early detection saves lives," Bentfield said. "By bringing this mobile service directly to the community, we’re empowering residents to take charge of their health in a convenient and meaningful way."
According to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, an estimated 226,650 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2025 in the U.S. Around 124,730 Americans die from lung cancer each year. Additionally, 1 in 16 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime.
The mobile unit will be set up at Ivy Tech Sellersburg, 8204 Highway 311. Appointments are required and people should call to schedule.
