LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Norton Healthcare has a new procedure that makes it easier for doctors to diagnose, and possibly treat, lung cancer.
In the procedure, known as Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy, doctors can diagnose and remove lung cancer masses in one surgery.Â
Norton said the procedure allows doctors to "scope all 18 segments of the lungs" where 70% of masses develop.
"We have answers in real time, for the most part. I usually tell patients that if cancer is there, we will find it, and we'll have some preliminary information the day of the procedure," Dr. Samantha Baah said.Â
The outpatient procedure can also reduce anxiety and long wait times for patients.Â
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. among men and women. Norton said Kentucky is the worst state in the country for lung cancer rates.
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This week, the American Cancer Society expanded the recommendations for lung cancer screenings.Â
The updated guidance advises anyone between the ages of 50 and 80, who currently or previously smoked, should talk with a doctor about getting screened. Previous guidance recommended screenings for those between the ages of 55 and 74.
