ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several inches of rain in less than one hour Monday caused a mess in Elizabethtown. And more storms are likely on the way later this week.

Lillian Beck, who lives in the Winding Springs neighborhood of Elizabethtown, woke up Tuesday to signs of the downpour all around her.

"It started out partly cloudy, a little overcast, and then, by about 3 p.m., that started to shift rather quickly," Beck said Tuesday. "It was torrential, almost monsoon-like."

Videos from Monday night show just how quick it happened, with intersections flooded and even cars partially submerged. Through it all, Elizabethtown and Hardin County first responders performed nine water rescues, including a car that hydroplaned on Western Kentucky Parkway. Someone was injured and transported to Baptist Health Hardin, according to department spokesperson Amy Inman.

"I don't think there is any level of preparation you can do when you are getting 4 inches of rain in less than an hour," said Chris Denham, public affairs officer for Elizabethtown police.

Despite that, much of the water receded in 30 minutes but not before causing a traffic headache and taking a toll on some landscaping. On Tuesday, several soccer fields still had a couple of inches of water, and retention ponds were at their brims.

"There is no infrastructure designed to support that kind of rainfall," Denham said. "Obviously, we are terribly sympathetic to people who have damage as a result thereof."

City officials, police, fire and EMS will remain in constant communication as more rain is expected in the next 48 hours, all with a reminder to stay away from any standing water.

"Everyone's appetite or experience, I think, could lead them to be confident in a situation like that," Beck said. "But it is always best to turn around and not risk it."
