LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Almost 9,000 wreaths were delivered to Zachary Taylor Cemetery in Louisville on Monday.
The national cemetery on Brownsboro Road had a goal of placing 11,000 wreaths on graves of servicemembers. According to a news release, tractor trailers brought 8,784 wreaths to the cemetery that were unloaded by volunteers. Those wreaths will cover 77 percent of all graves at the cemetery as part of a national effort led by Wreaths Across America.
An official ceremony at 4701 Brownsboro Road is scheduled for Saturday at noon. The public is invited to attend and participate.
Last year, Wreaths Across America brought 5,940 Main Balsam wreaths to the cemetery. Volunteers of all ages spent the afternoon placing wreaths around the cemetery.
Burial in a national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty or who die while on training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial.
