LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After years of planning, delays and construction challenges, the Grand Lyric Theater is ready to welcome the community inside its new home.
The new venue on West Muhammad Ali Boulevard will celebrate its grand opening with a week of events Aug. 17-22, including performances from soul and funk band The Curtis Family C-Notes.
The celebration will also feature a Family Arts Camp and a VIP gala as the theater marks the next chapter in its history.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in April, but the week-long celebration will officially introduce the venue to the community.
The multimillion-dollar project honors the legacy of the original Grand and Lyric theaters that once stood on Old Walnut Street, a historic hub for Louisville’s Black community.
The new theater has been years in the making. Construction started before the COVID-19 pandemic but was later paused because of funding issues.
Now, organizers say the Grand Lyric Theater will serve as a space for performances, arts education and community gatherings for years to come.
