LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tuesday was a difficult day for many country music fans following the death of award-winning artist Toby Keith.

The 62-year-old singer of hits like "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "Red Solo Cup" died Monday. He had been battling stomach cancer.

After Keith's death, Norton Healthcare is sharing information about the signs and symptoms of stomach cancer.

Dr. Michael Driscoll, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist  at the Norton Cancer Institute, said in general, there's a lack of effective screening for stomach cancer.

"That's one of the problems with gastric cancer is that we tend to find it late," Driscoll said. "So about 50 percent of people, on presentation, have advanced gastric cancer on diagnosis."

Driscoll said symptoms  include upper abdominal pain, weight loss, and bloody stool.

Norton Healthcare says stomach cancer is more common in men than women. Risk factors include age (most cases happen in people 60 or older), alcohol/tobacco use, diet, obesity, and family history.

Driscoll said once it's diagnosed, stomach cancer treatments include surgery and chemotherapy.
