LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The weekend is here, which means some of us will take to our couches and look for something new to binge.
Here are some shows and movies people in WDRB's newsroom are watching this weekend:
Shows to stream
The lessons of Mr. Miyagi are wrapping up. The final season of "Cobra Kai" just dropped new episodes on Netflix with all the drama between rivals Daniel and Johnny, life in the dojo and helping their students get ready for life beyond high school. You can binge the first five episodes now, but you'll have to wait to finish the sixth season when the rest of it drops in October.
"Atypical" on Netflix is a quirky dramedy about a teen on the autism spectrum who decides to get a girlfriend. There are four seasons that follow Sam's journey through his first job, moving into an apartment, living with a roommate and going to college as he works toward more independence.
Get in the mood for the Summer Olympics by catching up on "Emily in Paris" on Netflix, starring Lily Collins. A postcard to Paris, there are a few seasons already up on Netflix, with a new one on the way.
You can also prep for the Olympics by watching the new Netflix series "Simone Biles: Rising," which follows the Olympic gymnast as she balances her personal life, mental health journey and training ahead of her highly anticipated return to the Olympic stage. There are currently two episodes up on Netflix.
"Resident Alien" starring Alan Tudyk as an alien sent from another planet to destroy Earth, but he gets stuck here, and assumes the form of a small town doctor. The sci-fi series features a lot of Tudyk's comedic timing, pulling off adult humor and inside jokes. There are two of three seasons currently available on Netflix.
If you're a fan of "The Godfather" trilogy, you should enjoy "The Offer," a limited series now streaming on Paramount+. The binge-worthy drama tells the story of how Al Ruddy becomes the producer of Mari Puzo's bestselling novel, "The Godfather." The story takes liberties with the tale of how Ruddy convinces Francis Ford Coppola and Puza to write the script, while he convinces studio bosses and mafia connections that it will be a hit. We all know the movie turns out to be an Oscar Award-winning masterpiece, but the journey will make you want to rewatch the original films to really appreciate the series.
"Presumed Innocent" is the latest series to hit AppleTV+. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, the show follows a horrific murder case that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney's Office when one of its own is suspected of the crime as they fight to keep their family together. There are seven episodes available to stream, with the eighth dropping this coming Wednesday.
"Mayor of Kingstown" is a crime drama starring Jeremy Renner on Paramount+ about America's prison system. It follows the McLusky family, who lives in Kingstown, Michigan. The family are power brokers, who tackle themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality in the city where "the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry."
Movies, documentaries to stream
"Hillbilly Elegy," streaming on Netflix, is based on the best selling memoir by J.D. Vance, former President Donald Trump's running mate in this year's presidential election. The film, from Oscar winner Ron Howard, stars Glenn Close, who is hardly recognizable as Vance's grandmother who raised him, and Amy Adams.
"Young Woman and the Sea" dropped on Disney+ on Friday. The period drama starring Star Wars alumnae Daisy Ridley tells the story of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle as she tries to become the first woman to swim all 21 miles of the English Channel. Â
A new documentary on Netflix "Skywalkers: A Love Story" isn't related to Star Wars. Rather, it follows a pair of thrill-seeking "rooftoppers" whose hobby is illegally scaling skycrapers. Through the course of the documentary, the couple attempts to climb one of the tallest buildings in the world.
Another documentary on Netflix called "Homicide: Los Angeles" follows some of the city's "most shocking crimes." The five-episode series kicks off with the first episode following the story of famed music producer turned convicted murderer Phil Spector, who died in 2021.Â
If you're a fan of a good rom-com, "A Family Affair" is streaming on Netflix, starring Joey King, Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman. The movie follows King's character, Zara Ford, who works as a personal assistant to Efron's movie star character Chris Cole. But when she quits, Cole and Ford's widowed mother (Kidman) meet and have immediate chemistry. But Ford isn't having any of it.
