The cash option for a single winning ticket is an estimated $549.7 million.
If no one hits Friday's jackpot, it will grow. The next drawing is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 p.m.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won at $810 million in Texas on Sept. 10.
With only one more drawing this year, Mega Millions is on track to complete a second consecutive year with a very unusual jackpot roll pattern - indicative of the truly random nature of the game, Mega Millions said in a statement early Wednesday.
The jackpot has only been won three times so far in 2024, the fewest wins in any single year since the game began in 2002.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350, while the odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1 in 24, according to lottery officials.
The $1.22 billion payout is for a winner who opts for an annuity, doled out over 30 years. Winners usually prefer a lump sum option, which for Tuesday would be about $549.7 million.
A big slice of those winnings would go toward federal taxes, and many states also tax lottery payouts.
It doesn't seem to matter that the nation's top 10 jackpots — not including this one — already have boasted 10-figure payouts.
Here is a look at the largest U.S. jackpots won and the states where the winning tickets were sold:
1. $2.04 billion, Powerball, Nov. 7, 2022 (one ticket, from California)

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 each; in most jurisdictions, players can add the Megaplier for an additional $1 to multiply their non-jackpot prizes. Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold to support causes and retailer commissions. Drawings are conducted at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia.
