LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County's first nonpartisan election for mayor and Metro Council is just a month away.

Monday is the last day for Kentuckians to register to vote in the primary election. This applies to first-time voters, those with a change of address and those wanting to change their political party.

Registration must be completed before 4 p.m. Monday. To register to vote in Kentucky or update your current registration record, visit the Kentucky voter registration website.

"I am urging every voter, whether you've lived here your whole life or you're new to Jefferson County, to take a few minutes to educate yourself about what your ballot will look like," Jefferson County Clerk David Yates said in a news release. "Review it ahead of time. Talk with your family. Make a plan."

In 2024, state lawmakers overturned a veto from Gov. Andy Beshear to make those elections nonpartisan.

Other cities in Kentucky already have nonpartisan elections. This means party affiliation will not appear on the ballot. The top two candidates will then advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

Early voting for the primary starts May 14 and primary election day is May 19.

"This is a milestone for our county," Yates said in a news release. "It's an opportunity for more voices to be heard and for more voters to take part in choosing our local leadership. But it only works if people understand the process and participate."
