OFFICIALS: No threat after contaminated WV water reaches Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Contaminated water from West Virginia's chemical spill has reached Louisville.

The chemical plume is expected to move down the Ohio River and out of the area by Saturday.

Testing is underway right now. City leaders and the CDC say Louisville's drinking water is safe to drink and is not a public health concern. The Louisville Water Company says treatment of the water will leave none of the MCHM licorice-smelling chemical when it comes out of your faucet.

"This particular incident...we've dealt with much larger and we've never closed our intakes, so we can handle what comes in," said Kelley Dearing Smith of the Louisville Water Company. "We're very used to dealing with the Ohio River."

Kroger is stocking up on bottled water in Louisville and southern Indiana, to meet potential demand.
