LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Overnight closures of Interstate 264 are scheduled to start Tuesday night.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will start demolition work on I-264 as part of a $130 million improvement project on the Watterson Expressway and Brownsboro Road. The overnight closures on I-264 eastbound will cause traffic to be diverted via Brownsboro Road off-ramp at Exit 22.

KYTC said drivers will cross Brownsboro Road and rejoin I-264 east via the on-ramp located on the opposite side of the existing interchange.

According to a news release, the closures will occur nightly at these scheduled times:

  • Tuesday, July 22, from 7 p.m. to Wednesday, July 23, at 5 a.m.
  • Wednesday, July 23, from 7 p.m. to Thursday, July 24, at 5 a.m.
  • Thursday, July 24, from 7 p.m. to Friday, July 25, at 5 a.m.

KYTC said additional overnight closures of the interstate will be necessary in the coming weeks. Motorists are encouraged to use caution and heed signage.

Drivers and business owners alike are frustrated by the traffic changes.

"It's been tough, we were slow," said Akshay Kadam, a restaurant manager. "Our clientele is very regular, they come here like twice a week or sometimes four times a week and that is what their concern was how they are going to get over here."

Craig Cheney lives near the construction work. He can't avoid it because of how close his home is to the intersection.

"Considering we have to cross over to take our kid to school, it's a lot," Cheney said. "If they ever finish River Road, start using River Road more."

The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2027.

WDRB News reported earlier this year on the delays and cost increases of the plan that has been in the works since at least 2010.

The section of U.S. 42 over the Watterson will be rebuilt and widened, with a "single-point urban interchange" (SPUI) added there, according to previous WDRB reporting

The multiyear project will widen the Watterson between Westport Road and Interstate 71 in both directions to three lanes. The project calls for adding extra lanes to on- and off-ramps, including the ramp from I-264 East to I-71 North; the U.S. 42 westbound ramp onto I-264; and the I-264 West ramp to Westport Road.
