LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Lane closures take effect Friday night on Brownsboro Road (U.S. 42).

The lane restrictions start at 6 p.m., according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, part of the long-anticipated widening of the Interstate 264 near the new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital.

The closures and traffic shifts will happen on Brownsboro Road from Rudy Lane to Glenview Avenue, allowing crews to remove the raised barrier median to prepare the roadway for the reconstruction of the Brownsboro Road bridge over I-264.

WDRB News reported earlier this year on the delays and cost increases of the plan that has been in the works since at least 2010.

The section of U.S. 42 over the Watterson will be rebuilt and widened, with a "single-point urban interchange" (SPUI) added there, according to previous WDRB reporting

Kentucky awarded a $129.9 million contract to Cleary Construction Inc. in May.

Once the scheduled weekend work is complete, Brownsboro Road eastbound will be reduced to one through lane west of Rudy Lane, and Brownsboro Road westbound will be reduced to one through lane at Northfield Drive.

Turning movements from Brownsboro Road to I-264 East and West on-ramps will not be affected, according to KYTC. The restrictions are expected to remain in effect through the reconstruction of the Brownsboro Road bridge over I-264.

Motorists are asked to pay attention to traffic signs, use caution, and plan ahead when traveling.

The multiyear project will widen the Watterson between Westport Road and Interstate 71 in both directions to three lanes. The project calls for adding extra lanes to on- and off-ramps, including the ramp from I-264 East to I-71 North; the U.S. 42 westbound ramp onto I-264; and the I-264 West ramp to Westport Road.

The project is expected to be completed by the the fall of 2027. The timeline could be adjusted, depending on weather conditions or unforeseen delays.
