LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jeffersonville city councilman Bill Burns announced Wednesday that he'll run for mayor in the city.

Burns, who's served on city council since 2020, is the second person to join the race since Mayor Mike Moore announced he'd retire after his 16th year leading the city.

"Our campaign is about people," Burns said in a news release Wednesday. "It’s about listening and building a better future for mine and your grandchildren. “On the City Council, I championed equitable growth and collaborative decision-making. I will do the same as Mayor.”

In February, Moore said he wants to spend more time with his growing family, especially his grandchildren.

"This job can be a lot of fun, but this job can be a lot of stress and I just, you know, this will be a 16-year presence, and I think it's time for somebody else," Moore said. "I mean, we have accomplished a lot. We've got a lot to be proud of. But I think it's time for maybe the next generation to step in and let's see where they take us."

Moore, a Republican, was elected mayor of the southern Indiana city in November 2011 and is currently serving his fourth consecutive term.

Vicki Carmichael, who previously served as a Clark County Circuit Court judge, will also run for mayor. On her campaign website, Carmichael said she brings a "wealth of experience, a reputation for fairness, and a bold new vision for the city’s future."
