LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — More than 20 states, including Kentucky, are suing the Trump administration over a policy involving personal information collected through a federal assistance program.
The lawsuit targets a policy that would give the federal government access to records from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program for immigration status checks.
TANF helps families pay for services such as child care, emergency housing for people fleeing domestic violence, emergency food assistance and support for grandparents raising children.
According to the lawsuit, the federal Administration for Children and Families announced the changes last month. States argue the policy would give federal officials access to sensitive information collected through state TANF programs.
The lawsuit also argues the changes would unlawfully expose recipients' private information and that states are responsible for verifying applicants' immigration status.
More than 28,000 Kentuckians receive TANF benefits.
