LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — A portion of the Ohio River is closed in Trimble County due to powerlines down in the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed a two-mile stretch of the river Thursday to all vessel traffic and said the line, owned by the Indiana and Kentucky Electric Cooperative, came down into the navigable channel.

Coast Guard officials said two vessels are waiting outside the safety zone, one traveling upbound and one downbound.

Trimble County Emergency Management said in a post on Facebook the river near mile marker 560 is closed, telling boaters to avoid the area of the IKEC Power plant. That's in the area of Madison, Indiana, and Milton, Kentucky.

Officials said emergency response crews and utility resources are headed to the site to assess the remaining cables and towers, secure the power source and remove the hazard from the waterway.

It's unclear at this time how long it will be closed, but officials said the closure will remain in place until the utility resolves the issue and the Coast Guard determines the channel is safe to reopen.

Additionally, emergency management officials said in a separate Facebook post that Coopers Bottom Road is closed from Coopers Creek Campground to just past the Helton Campground for electric line repair.

This comes after strong storms swept across the Kentuckiana region overnight, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and reports of tornadoes in several communities.

The severe weather moved through the region late Wednesday into early Thursday, with at least two radar-confirmed tornadoes in parts of southern Indiana.

The National Weather Service is expected to conduct storm surveys to determine whether tornadoes touched down and, if so, how strong they were.
