LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Remains of a World War II soldier will be buried in Kentucky next week.

Private First Class Kenneth Burgess was a soldier from Central City, about 120 miles southwest of Louisville. He was assigned to the 4th Ranger Battalion "Darby's Rangers" and went missing in action during the war.

Burgess was later reported to have been killed in action near Sala, Italy, during Operation Avalanche, but his body was never found. The War Department declared Burgess non-recoverable on May 10, 1948.

He was accounted for in September 2024 after his remains were exhumed in March 2022 from the now-called Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Rome, Italy.

Burgess' funeral will be held Wednesday, May 7 at Tucker Funeral Home, with burial to follow.

The Past Conflict Repatriations Branch based out of Fort Knox helps find unidentified soldiers.
