LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As colder weather approaches, many residents in our area will have a hard time paying their utility bills.

Thursday morning, people lined up at the Urban Government Center on Barret Avenue.

But the assistance won't come today.

People are here to make an appointment to come back and get help.

Thursday, appointments are being scheduled in person only-- between 7 a.m.- 4 p.m.

If you can't make it today, you can also sign up for an appointment Friday or Monday.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program--or LIHEAP, is made possible through a grant from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

After registering for an appointment this morning, residents will get an appointment slip verifying the appointment date, time and location.

LIHEAP applications will be completed during that appointment and the assistance received is a one-time benefit, paid to the heating vendor.

Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines.

During the actual appointment later on, other items will be needed.
