LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Shelby County students are set to head back to school next Wednesday, this year with a new superintendent.

Dr. Joshua Matthews joined WDRB Mornings on Wednesday to talk about what to expect from this school year.

Matthews has a long background in school corporation, recently as the chief academic officer of Logan County Schools and previously as a teacher. He expressed his excitement to be in the community and is optimistic about his first year as superintendent.

Matthews has set goals to accomplish in things like reading and writing but also is looking to accomplish a bigger goal for the students.

"We are going to accomplish some really, really great things," Matthews said Wednesday. "Not just the things we are good at, but the things that are really going to make students life-ready and work-ready. We're going to build on things that Shelby County has done in the past."

Matthews asked that parents continue to be patient with the district when it comes to traffic.
