LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People in counties all over Kentucky suffered damage from Friday night's storm and that includes Louisville's Shively neighborhood.
In Kentucky, some 18 people were killed by severe weather, and the death toll is likely to rise, according to Gov. Andy Beshear.Â
Beshear said 17 people were killed in Laurel County, while one person died in Pulaski County. There are also 10 people from Laurel County who sustained critical injuries.
Heavy winds blew through the neighborhood near Western High School. The winds were so strong, a large tree was knocked onto a woman's house causing the ceiling to collapse on her bed.
Linda Kilburne-Meador was in the bathroom watching the storms when she heard a loud boom come from her bedroom. When she stood in her bedroom doorway, she watched her ceiling collapse on her bed.
She says she felt lucky that because of the storms she went to bed later than normal.
"If I had went to bed like I normally do at 10 o'clock, I would've been in the bed when it happened," Kilburne-Meador said.
She says it was a surreal moment and all she could do was stand and watch as her ceiling caved in.
"I've never been through anything like this, so my nerves are a wreck," she said.
Even though it was a terrifying moment, Kilburne-Meador says she's grateful her family came out on the other side of the storm unharmed.
"Considering people that's lost their lives already, I feel really lucky...stuff's replaceable, I just have to accept it and move on," Kilburne-Meador said.
