LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There was fire and smoke at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport Tuesday morning, as dozens of people and first responders took part in a mock plane crash.

Flames were used to imitate a real-life situation during the simulated crash. The scenario focused on a plane that crashed during snowy conditions and landed upside down. That's very similar to a situation that happened in Toronto recently.

The FAA requires emergency training exercises at least once every three years.

About 100 volunteers portraying victims, and 150 first responders from local, state, and federal facilities, took part in the drill, with preparations beginning about a year and a half ago.

Public Safety Officer Jonathan Biven said the simulation is the best way to prepare for any catastrophic event so "that we know how to respond to it, and everybody's on the same playing field."

The training did not affect operations at the airport, which continued as normal.
