LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Road crews in Kentucky and Indiana are preparing for another round of winter weather after clearing an inch of snow that fell Monday morning. A winter storm warning is in effect for much of the region through Tuesday, with 3 to 5 more inches of snow expected overnight.

State and local road crews have been working throughout the day to keep roadways clear. Brine, a salt and water mixture, was applied ahead of the snowfall to help prevent ice and snow from bonding to the pavement.

"It's just a salt and water mixture. That solution helps break the initial bond of ice and snow to the roadway," said Sidney Nierman, public information officer with INDOT. "Of course, our crews have continued to plow and maintain those roadways throughout the day today."

Once the snow began falling, crews switched to salt treatments to help melt any remaining snow and ice. That approach will continue as the next system moves in overnight.

Snow is expected to fall in the Louisville area Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Louisville’s Metro Public Works team has also been dealing with flooding concerns while working to clear snowy roads. Crews finished clearing dozens of routes around noon Monday and are now preparing plows and salt trucks for another round of work.

It's been challenging for many road crews this week because of the changing weather, officials said.

"Our teams have stepped up," said Sal Melendez, a Metro Public Works spokesperson. "They understand that commitment, and that commitment is to make sure that our roadways are safe from any kind of obstacle, whether it's snow, flooding or any debris that accumulates during those situations."

Despite multiple winter storms this season, salt barns remain fully stocked and ready for continued treatment.

"We are consistently ordering to keep those materials stocked up and ready to go," Nierman said.

Officials urge drivers to use caution as conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight, with road crews continuing operations through the storm.
