JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Jeffersonville nonprofit can now continue its' mission of taking donated furniture to furnish homes for people in need.

Happy Home Furniture Bank was designed to help people moving from the street or a shelter into permanent housing. Christy Spence runs it out of an old warehouse space in Jeffersonville.

But now, with a new single box truck, they can better serve hundreds of families throughout Kentuckiana.

"We know these folks have a legitimate need," Spence said.

Happy Home serves the entire Louisville area, providing furnishings and décor to people coming out of homelessness, domestic violence situations or other life situations that leave them with little else than the clothes on their backs.

WDRB's previous coverage on Happy Home helped the nonprofit raise nearly $40,000 for the new truck.

"I can't even explain what it means to have a reliable vehicle," Spence said.

The truck is now paid in full and has a year's worth of insurance coverage.

"This is just a major step for the organization," Spence said.

According to Spence, 34 families have been waiting for a delivery. Now that wait is over.

"Later this week, there are going to be people sleeping on beds, eating dinner at a table, having family time on a couch," she said.

Happy Home Furniture works exclusively with local groups to provide furniture to those in need.

"The majority of them right now are sleeping on the floor, on piles of clothes. Some of them are fortunate enough to have an air mattress," Spence said. "But now that we have a reliable truck, we're going to be able to get back on the road delivering to those houses."

Since January 2023, the team of volunteers has served nearly 200 households.

"Later this week, there are going to be people sleeping on beds, eating dinner at a table, or having family time on a couch that has literally been in an empty echoey apartment or home," Spence said.
