Blake Coombs - Jan. 21, 2020 court appearance

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A teen accused of leading police on a chase that ended with a crash that killed two people appeared before a judge Tuesday morning.

Indiana State Police say 18-year-old Blake Coombs led officers on a chase through southern Indiana earlier this month. It ended in Madison, Indiana, where Coombs crashed.

The two other teens who were in the car — 19-year-old Brooklyn James and 18-year-old Tyler Cooley — died as a result of the crash.

Coombs was taken to University Hospital in Louisville. He appeared in a Jefferson County courtroom Tuesday morning after being released. Now that he's out of the hospital, Coombs is expected to be extradited back to Indiana on previous charges.

Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter is waiting to file new charges for the chase and the crash once the final police report is filed.

Until he is extradited, Coombs is being housed at Metro Corrections in downtown Louisville. Local Indiana authorities have 30 days to pick him up. The judge Tuesday said she does not expect he will remain in Louisville that long.

There was already a warrant out for Coombs' arrest in Indiana. Police say he had escaped from custody from a group home in Richmond, Indiana — where he may have stolen a car — before the chase and deadly crash. He was at the home for charges he got as a juvenile.
