LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A foundation devoted to helping retired race horses is launching a drive to raising funds for its mission.
Headquartered in Saratoga Springs, New York, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation gives refuge to retired racehorses who can't continue an athletic career. The foundation, founded in 1983, saves Thoroughbreds from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter according to the foundation's website.
The foundation launched the 2023 Hay Drive after receiving a matching $60,000 gift from the Santulli Family Foundation.Â
"We are deeply grateful to the Santulli Family Foundation for their unwavering support of our mission," Kelly Armer, executive director of the TRF, said in a news release Tuesday. "This generous matching grant will help us provide the necessary care to retired racehorses, ensuring they live their retirement years in comfort and happiness."
The foundation has farms all over the country that house the horses, with Thoroughbreds living on the Chestnut Hall Farm in Oldham County, Kentucky. There, visitors are able to tour the farm and see some of the horses living there.
The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the oldest and largest Thoroughbred rescue in the country, is supported solely by private donations. The foundation holds many fundraising events during the year to continue its mission on providing comfortable lifestyles for retired racehorses.Â
