LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One eastbound lane of Interstate 64 on the Sherman Minton bridge opened overnight.

All three I-64E lanes that carry traffic across the Sherman Minton Bridge from southern Indiana into Louisville were supposed to reopen Monday morning, but that didn't happen, causing confusion and chaos for many drivers.

Officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation posted online early Monday that all lanes would remain closed until 5 a.m. Friday (May 24). However, a subsequent email from officials with the Sherman Minton Renewal Project just before noon said crews are working to reopen one lane to traffic "overnight."

"We regret any inconvenience to drivers caused by the delay of the reopening," INDOT Project Manager Danny Corbin said in the email, adding that the delay was caused by "required maintenance of traffic adjustments."

"Crews are working to open the single lane as soon as possible. A single lane will remain open on I-64 eastbound until 5 a.m. on Friday, May 24 to allow for additional concrete curing time.  The remaining two lanes will be opened Friday morning providing three open lanes for eastbound traffic through the Memorial Day weekend."

The eastbound lanes have been closed since May 6 to allow crews to finish concrete work on the lower bridge approaches.

The ongoing construction is part of the Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which involves painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked span up to 30 more years of life.
