LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man who died after he was hit by a shuttle bus outside the Valhalla Golf Club on Shelbyville Road early Friday morning was trying to enter the course for his job as a security guard.

The victim -- now identified as 69-year-old John Mills -- was hit around 5 a.m. in the 15500 block of Shelbyville Road, right across from Valhalla, according to information from Louisville Metro Police. An investigation found Mills was crossing Shelbyville Road from south to north, when he was hit.

His family told WDRB that "he was working security and having a fun time at Valhalla this week. He enjoyed staying busy in retirement. We love him and will miss him."

Statement from Mayor Greeberg

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg released a statement identifying the victim and offering condolences to his family Friday afternoon:

"This morning, our city experienced a tragic accident that took the life of John Mills, a Louisvillian who will be greatly missed by his family and our community. Our focus is on this family who lost their loved one. I have spoken with members of Mr. Mills’ family to convey our city’s condolences.

"Following this tragedy, LMPD stopped traffic to assist with its investigation into the fatal accident. It is unfortunate that an incident took place between an LMPD officer and Mr. Scheffler while he was attempting to enter Valhalla. LMPD is fully investigating this incident and the legal process will proceed. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation.

"We remain focused on the tragic loss of life and will share more information on both of these matters as available."

PGA of America also released a statement Friday, not long after the incident:

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Scottie Scheffler's Arrest

Over an hour later, at 6:18 a.m. a detective directing traffic near the accident scene tried to stop Scottie Scheffler -- currently ranked No. 1 in the world -- as he attempted to drive around stopped traffic in a marked PGA car to enter Valhalla, according to court documents.

Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground," according to the arrest report.

Scheffler was arrested near Valhalla Gate One a few minutes later, at 6:20.

Police said he failed to follow directions and injured an LMPD detective with his vehicle.

Gillis was taken to the hospital with cuts on his wrist and knee.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and captured part of it on video. In the video you can hear Scheffler say "can you please help me?"

Later in the video a police officer says: "Here's the thing: right now, right now, he's going to jail. He's going to jail and it ain't nothing you can do about it, period. There is nothing you can do about it."

Darlington reported Scheffler, who was in a marked PGA vehicle, was told to stop but "slowly moved forward" before he eventually stopped and rolled down his window. That's when the detective opened the door, pulled Scheffler out of the vehicle and arrested him.

Scheffler is charged with felony assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic, according to court records. He was deemed low risk and released on his own recognizance by police.

Scheffler returned to the course at 9:12, and WDRB saw him walk back onto the practice range around 10 o'clock for his tee time.

He has a court appearance scheduled in Louisville on May 21.
