Woman arrested after allegedly stealing signs related to disappearance of Crystal Rogers

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- The family of missing Bardstown woman Crystal Rogers had put up hundreds of signs across the area to spread awareness about her disappearance.

Recently, they tried to round them up and give them away for free. But a few weeks ago, the signs started disappearing.

Last week, surveillance video from a Bardstown Circle K gas station led to an arrest.

Nelson County Sheriff's detectives arrested Crystal Maupin on Friday. According to an arrest warrant, the video shows Maupin "getting out of her car and taking the sign."

Ballard said Maupin is dating Rogers' former boyfriend, Brooks Houck, who happens to be the only suspect named in the disappearance.

"Why wouldn't she help us? said Sherry Ballard, Crystal Rogers' mother. "Why wouldn't the give us all the support? If he is so innocent, like he says he is..."

Rogers disappeared in July of 2015. Last November, her father, Tommy Ballard, was shot and killed while hunting. After Ballard's death, friends created the new sign as a show of support.

"Just to see the support with her signs, it means a lot," Sherry Ballard said.

Kentucky State Police recently searched the home of Houck's grandmother. Ballard doesn't know why, but she believes the signs could help provide answers or maybe even a miracle.

"I still have that little ray of hope that she's out there somewhere," Sherry Ballard said.

Maupin posted bond and was released from jail the same day she was arrested. She's charged with theft by unlawful taking.
