LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The YMCA Safe Place Services has a new way to help young people in crisis.

YMCA Safe Place Service has a new texting option that connects youth in crisis with locally trained volunteers to provide support. The texting line is available at any time.

According to a news release, youth facing a crisis or anyone assisting or witnessing a young person in distress can reach YMCA Safe Place Services through a text option.

The youth will be directed to one of Safe Place Services' offerings like the Shelter House, the Youth Development Center, Y-Now Mentoring or the Street Outreach Program.

YMCA said signs of a young person in crisis include a young person suddenly unhoused with nowhere to turn, a young person with family conflicts and needs a breather or a student needs assistance because their parent is incarcerated or experiencing active addiction.

People can text (502) 635-5233 to alert YMCA Safe Place Services staff so they can provide support and resources to young people.

YMCA Safe Place Service began in Louisville in 1983. It expanded to 20,000 locations across the U.S. and is now a national model.

The Safe Place Services branch is located at 2400 Crittenden Drive in the St. Joseph neighborhood. It's open 24 hours a day.
