Violent offenders have been back on the streets within days, sometimes hours after an arrest in Louisville.
It's called Less is More.
More than 200 people submitted ideas for the essay contest, which closed Oct. 4.
The contest, which closed Oct. 4, had five rules for submission.
Last week, they learned the suspect, Jameko Hayden, struck a plea deal that could mean he serves just 10 years in prison for killing Christian Gwynn.
Some Louisville community members said they were feeling increasingly hopeful after a meeting focused on reducing the level of violence in the city.
As of July 27, the Louisville Metro Police Department has launched 98 homicide investigations in 2022.
On Wednesday, a juvenile was arrested and charged with starting a massive warehouse fire in the Russell neighborhood that injured three firefighters.
Project Safeguard has three goals: Reduce drug-related violent crime, get guns out of the hands of violent offenders and work with U.S. Marshals to find and arrest fugitives.
"We cannot forget about the level of violence that's just steamrolling through," the activist said.
