LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Journalism and Sovereignty, the winners of the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, respectively, were installed as the top two choices for the 2025 Belmont Stakes after Monday’s post-position draw for Saturday’s race at Saratoga.

Journalism, the only horse to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown, drew post 7 and was made the 8-5 morning-line favorite by NYRA oddsmaker David Aragona. Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the Curlin colt surged through traffic to win the Preakness by a half-length.

Sovereignty, the Godolphin homebred who won the Derby with a strong closing kick, drew post 2 and was listed at 2-1. Júnior Alvarado returns to ride for trainer Bill Mott.

Other contenders include:

  • Baeza (4-1): Third in the Derby, with Flavien Prat aboard.
  • Rodríguez (6-1): Wood Memorial winner returning from injury for Bob Baffert and Mike Smith.
  • Hill Road (10-1): Peter Pan winner for Chad Brown, drawing the rail with Irad Ortiz Jr.
  • Uncaged (30-1): One of two new shooters for Todd Pletcher, a son of Curlin ridden by Luis Saez.
  • Crudo (15-1): Pletcher’s other entry, winner of the Preakness Day Sir Barton Stakes ridden by John Velazquez.
  • Heart of Honor (39-1): Fifth in the Preakness, trained by Jamie Osborne and ridden by Saffie Osborne.

The Belmont Stakes has been shortened to 1 1/4 miles and will be run at Saratoga for the second year while Belmont Park undergoes renovation. Post time is 7:04 p.m. EDT Saturday on FOX.
