LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Former University of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater plans to retire from the NFL after the season, reported by the Detroit Free Press.
Bridgewater has appeared in just one game this season as the Detroit Lions' backup quarterback.Â
After playing three seasons at Louisville and winning a Sugar Bowl, Bridgewater was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. The Miami native led the Vikings to the postseason and was selected to a Pro Bowl in his second season in the NFL.
Bridgewater led the Vikings to an 11-5 record in 2015, but he was injured during a practice ahead of the 2016 season and was sidelined for the entire year.Â
He later played for the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins. Bridgewater has thrown for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns in his NFL career. He has a 33-32 record quarterback record in nine seasons.
Bridgewater, who won the Most Valuable Player in the 2013 Sugar Bowl, continues to visit Louisville. Last year, Bridgewater and Lamar Jackson hosted the Derby City Reunion Weekend at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in the Russell neighborhood.
While playing at Louisville for coach Charlie Strong, Bridgewater amassed 9,817 passing yards and 74 passing touchdowns in three seasons. The Cardinals went 12-1 and finished ranked 15th in Bridgewater's final season at Louisville.
