LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana University announced Monday night it will erect a bronze statue honoring the late Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The statue will be displayed in the south lobby alongside the statues commemorating IU's 1976 National Championship team. An anonymous donor is funding the project.

Knight, who died in 2023, coached at Indiana from 1971 to 2000, compiling a 662-239 record and leading the Hoosiers to three NCAA championships (1976, 1981, 1987). His 1975-76 team went 32-0, the last undefeated national champion in Division I men's basketball.

"Coach Knight's influence on the game of basketball is immeasurable, but his impact on this university and Hoosier basketball fans is even deeper," said IU Athletic Director Scott Dolson, who worked as a student manager under Knight. "This statue will be a well-deserved tribute to a man who didn't just win games; he changed how the sport is played."

During his 29 years in Bloomington, Knight also won an NIT title in 1979 and 11 Big Ten regular-season championships. His 902 career victories rank sixth in college basketball history. He is a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame, the National College Basketball Hall of Fame, and the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Current IU coach Darian DeVries praised the decision following the Hoosiers' game Sunday night.

"I think it's great," DeVries said. "Any way you can honor especially Coach Knight and the greats that have played here, I think it's something that's well deserved and great that it's going to be recognized."

Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Studios will design and create the statue. Additional details about the project timeline will be announced in the coming months.
