LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville City FC earned an emotional 4-2 win Saturday against Rhode Island FC.
A shoving match broke out in the 88th minute at Lynn Family Stadium, and both sides crowded into LouCity’s goal area.
Rhode Island forward J.J. Williams appeared to make contact with a LouCity player during the incident and was issued a red card.
"I think we always talk about being together and collective in everything that we do. Obviously, this week has been hard for all of us, as a club, as a team," LouCity's Kyle Adams said. "Going down early at home, a lot of teams might roll over in that sort of situation. But not us."
Rhode Island scored first in the 20th minute, but LouCity tied it a few minutes later.
LouCity held a 3-2 advantage heading into stoppage time, but Jansen Wilson found the back of the net to extend the lead.
It was the first league victory for LouCity interim coach Simon Bird and extended the club's home unbeaten streak to 26 games.
"The expectation is we continue with our mentality," Bird said. "We continue to be calm in situations like that. I felt the guys handled it well, and I was really pleased with the way we saw out the game."
