LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville City FC made a special addition to its roster this week, signing 8-year-old Ezekiel Nzombi — affectionately known as "Zeek" — to a one-game contract in partnership with Norton Children's.
Zeek, who overcame a childhood stroke thanks to the care he received at Norton Children's, joined the team at training Thursday and officially put pen to paper on his deal. He'll be available for selection when LouCity takes on FC Tulsa on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
"We are so happy that we could sign Ezekiel to a contract here at Louisville City," head coach Danny Cruz said. "His fight, his spirit, and his commitment are traits that we want in all of our players. I am grateful for our partnership with Norton Children's and privileged to get to meet some amazing young kids. We are looking forward to having Ezekiel with the group this week!"
Zeek was just 2 years old when he suffered a stroke. With the help of Norton Children's specialized care, he began a long road to recovery — one that culminated in his release from care this past May. Now a thriving second grader, he plays basketball and soccer and embraces life with the same joy and energy that LouCity hopes to channel on the field.
In addition to his on-field role, Zeek will be honored at halftime as Norton Children's Superhero of the Game — a fan-favorite tradition that celebrates children who face medical challenges with strength and resilience.
This marks the fourth year of LouCity's partnership with Norton Children's to spotlight a patient and welcome them into the team. Past honorees include "Super Drew" Esposito (2022), who helped inspire a win over the Charleston Battery after his battle with a brain tumor; Titas Verhey (2023), who joined the team while fighting a rare cancer; and Ethan Wright (2024), a Type 1 diabetes patient whose match ended in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Sacramento Republic.
Norton Children's is a leading provider of pediatric care in Kentucky and southern Indiana, offering a wide range of services through its hospitals, medical center, outpatient locations, and specialty practices.Â
