LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – For Terrence Edwards Jr., it’s been a crazy 48 hours. His girlfriend went to the hospital to have the couple’s first son on Saturday.
After their son, Terrence Edwards III, was born late in the day, the player took some time to savor the moment and be with his new family, then a snowstorm hitting Louisville prevented him from catching his private flight Saturday night to South Bend for the Cardinals’ game today at Notre Dame.
Louisville coach Pat Kelsey was watching things closely. They were about to dispatch a driver with a four-wheel drive vehicle to get Edwards to South Bend for the 8 p.m. start, but he was able to catch a flight in the morning.
The new father got to the arena in time for the team’s pregame shootaround.
Louisville's Terrence Edwards drives the lane in an 88-78 win over Miami on Feb. 8, 2025 in the KFC Yum! Center.
“He walked in and our team, like, erupted,” Kelsey said. “They were so excited to see him. He’s such a beloved member of our team.”
And an important member. Edwards was the ACC Player of the Week last week, and over his last five games has averaged just under 21 points per game for the Cardinals. With his son’s arrival imminent, he had missed practices and film work in advance of the Notre Dame game. But the team and staff were committed to Edwards being able to make his family his first priority.
Coaches communicated with Edwards over Zoom when he wasn’t doing more important things. He got offensive breakdowns from assistant Mike Cassidy and defensive prep from Brian Kloman.
Once back in basketball mode, Edwards picked up right where he left off. He played his usual tough defense while scoring 14 points in Louisville’s 20th win of the season, the first time the program has reached that number since 2020.
Edwards has been a major part of that accomplishment.
“Terrence is just a wonderful human being and is going to be an unbelievable dad,” Kelsey said. “It's probably more than you guys want to know, but I'm just so proud of him. He got up here late. Had to fly up today, just got to the shootaround at the last second, and it just was really good. And he led and played very well for us, as always."
Edwards was to get a chance to sleep (a little bit) on the team flight home and will have a few days to adjust to balancing fatherhood and basketball. The Cards don’t play again until Florida State visits the KFC Yum! Center on Friday afternoon.
