OVERTIME | With so many injuries, how to evaluate Louisville basketball the rest of the season? | Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Playing without Skyy Clark, out with a broken rib, the Louisville men’s basketball team got out to a decent lead at Boston College Tuesday night, only to be blitzed — outscored by 20 — in the second half of an 89-77 loss.

You can write off some of Louisville’s defensive problems to a lack of depth. It has given up at least 80 points in 10 of its 14 ACC games. But many of those defensive problems are the same ones the team had when they had everybody available.

So, how are we to judge what happened Tuesday night, and what happens down the stretch of the season. WDRB’s Rick Bozich and Eric Crawford had that discussion in the latest edition of “Overtime,” which streams on-demand at WDRB+

WALZ CHOPS AWAY AT ACC FINE: As expected this week, the ACC fined Louisville women’s basketball coach Jeff Walz for his comments critical of officiating after a ridiculous intentional foul call at the end of the Cardinals’ loss at Syracuse on Sunday. The fine of $20,000, of course, was excessive. The public comments of the ACC were, of course, non-existent. But on Wednesday, the NCAA issued a statement that was as close to “don’t do what this ACC official just did,” as you can get without saying those words, and we still hear crickets from the ACC. Walz, meanwhile, chopped up some previously downed trees in his yard and offered to sell the firewood to help pay his fine (facetiously, we think). The episode is over, but is sure to live on in the lore of Walz’s Louisville tenure.
KENTUCKY STOPS THE BLEEDING: The Kentucky basketball team ended a three-game home losing streak to turn down the heat on Tuesday night with an impressive win over Ole Miss. But the Wildcats get out of the frying pan only in time to jump back into the fryer with a trip to Auburn on Saturday, and the Tigers not only are unbeaten at home, but are obliterating visitors, like No. 11-ranked South Carolina, which they beat by 40 on Wednesday night. How big is this Quad 1 matchup for John Calipari’s Wildcats?
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ACC?: In the latest NCAA Tournament bracket projection by The Athletic, the ACC had only three teams in the field — North Carolina, Duke and Clemson. This is a proud league with a sterling tradition that has unquestionably valued basketball first until the last decade or so. Let's send up a drone and ask, what has happened to this powerhouse conference?
KENTUCKY GETS (ANOTHER) NEW OC: Kentucky is welcoming its fourth new offensive coordinator in four years, with Bush Hamdan meeting with the media on Thursday. He has been an assistant at Boise State but previously was on staffs at Florida and Mississippi State. Something hasn’t clicked in this position for Kentucky coach Mark Stoops. Do we think this hire will be different?
OHIO STATE BASKETBALL SEARCH: Ohio State University has parted ways with head basketball coach and Kentucky native Chris Holtmann, and generally this would not be a topic for us, but a lot of names that have been much in the public around here for a while apparently will get a serious look from Ohio State. Leaders for this job are, in no particular order, Greg McDermott of Creighton, Sean Miller of Xavier, UCLA’s Mick Cronin, FAU’s Dusty May, Nate Oats of Alabama and South Carolina’s Lamont Paris. Which way will the Buckeyes go?
WHAT WE MISSED: According to a story first posted by The Athletic, college football officials will meet later this month to discuss the adoption of a 2-minute warning in college football games. Like the idea? Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that NCAA Tournament expansion is moving back to the front burner as ACC commissioner Jim Phillips (oh look, he CAN talk) says power conference commissioners are looking for a more “sustainable” NCAA Tournament. Sustainable, of course, means profitable. Does the tournament need to expand? Caitlin Clark goes for the women’s basketball scoring record on Friday night on Peacock. You going to be watching?
