Ramsey Middle School students dive into health care careers early with hands-on training

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A JCPS middle school is proving it's never too early to start pursuing a job in the health care field.

Students at Ramsey Middle School get to practice drawing blood and prescribing medications to fake patients.

"We are lab technicians," Janeah Nelson said at a mock clinic.

Nelson has always wanted to be a nurse.

"Pediatrician or maternity nurse," Nelson said. "I've always loved kids."

Attending Ramsey Middle School helps her chase that goal because of the school's health explore pathway.

"I've learned many things, including how to draw blood, check vitals, and x-rays," said Bryce Thomas, Ramsey Health Care Ambassador.

The program prepares students for their dream jobs with hands-on training and mock clinics.

"This is just one of the greatest experiences I could personally have," Thomas said.

Students practice everything from CPR and wound care to prescribing medication to teachers, staff, and other fake patients. They take these opportunities very seriously.

"You just let me know if you have any pain or discomfort," Thomas said to a "patient" during a practice blood pressure screening.

It's a chance for students to explore career interests and learn what excites them. Even if some decide against going to medical school, they still learn important life-skills.

"My face isn't stuck in a book," Zion Mitchell said. "I'm working with my peers."

Thomas believes it will also help him with public speaking and socialization.

"I would like to be in sports psychology, so this helps me talk to people I'm not close with," Thomas said. "Also, it just makes me a better person because I understand not everyone is going to be the same as me."

Students and staff said this pathway inspires young minds to become the next generation of doctors and nurses.

"I'm really excited to see what the future will look like," Nelson said.
