LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville teen is creating quite the buzz around town with his business that first started out as a hobby. He has an affinity of all things Bees.
At just 16, Keith Griffith III is a professional beekeeper and the community is swarming to support him. He took time from his busy schedule Monday to discuss his business on WDRB Mornings.Â
Griffith's business, Beeing2gether, came about as a result of his love for the outdoors.Â
"At a young age, really, about like 11 or 12, I really liked to be outside a lot. And after I got done doing what I was doing -- like playing around or playing catch or something -- I could sit down and watch the bees. And my uncle was a beekeeper a couple of years before me. It was cool and everything, and I used to like to watch him doing it.
"I really fell in love with it after I fed the bees for the first time. After that I was like, 'I'm doing this.'"
Griffith said he battled some mental health issues when he was younger, and beekeeping helped him cope.Â
"I'm glad I found something to bounce back off of to do. Beekeeping, I found it really enjoyable. And once I fell in love with that, I like to inspire people with anything new that you can help cure sadness."
Griffith has also written a book about his experiences.Â
Although many people have a fear of bees and their first instinct is to swat at them, Griffith said bees play a vital role in our ecosystem.Â
"Bees are really important to us because bees really help grow crops and everything, so they're really important. People say when bees go extinct, humans will go with them."
Another big benefit from bees: their honey. Griffith has honey from his bees, along with items like beeswax and other novelties available for sale at the website www.beeing2gether.com. For info, call 502-230-7414.Â
"It's the best honey in Louisville, Kentucky," Griffith said. "And worldwide."Â
