LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Neighbors helping neighbors is transforming the Portland neighborhood in Louisville.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser explored Love City.
In 2015, Shawn and Inga Arvin moved to the Portland neighborhood.
The house they wanted was free with the purchase of the 20,000 square foot community center building next door.
The Arvin’s bought the building, renovated the house and moved in.
They started opening the basketball gym in the building to kids in the neighborhood.
It provided a safe place to play ball.
The snack bar in the back allowed for a fish fry to raise money to pay the light bill.
Love City was born.
The 501c3 focused on building and developing community by just loving the neighbors.
Love City is now run by the community and continues its mission of providing resources and knowledge to create a beautiful vibrant neighborhood.
The four pillars of Love City consist of access to quality education, access to quality healthcare, affordable housing, and economic stimulation.
Programs and initiatives change over time in response to the needs of the neighborhood but they always fit under these four pillars.
The Open Gym program has now grown into a full community school called Mighty Oak Academy.
The fish fry has grown into a full restaurant for several years.
Programs come and go, but the mission stays the same.
